Batteries: The Real Restriction
The rule that actually governs most vaporizers and e-rigs isn't about the device itself — it's about the lithium battery inside it. CATSA and most airlines require spare lithium batteries to travel in carry-on baggage only, not checked luggage, due to fire risk. Devices with batteries installed are generally fine in either, but keep them in carry-on to be safe and to avoid any issue if a bag gets searched.
Checked vs. Carry-On
Carry-on is the safer choice for the device itself, both for the battery rule above and because it keeps a somewhat fragile piece of electronics out of baggage handling. Empty any water attachments completely before you pack — airline security has no allowance for liquids in checked or carry-on gear, even a small amount left in a bubbler.
Traveling With an E-Rig Specifically
An e-rig's self-contained design actually works in your favor here — no butane torch to explain, no open flame concerns. Pack the base unit and crucible in carry-on, leave any water attachment empty and dry, and you're dealing with the same restrictions as any other battery-powered electronic.
What About the Concentrate or Herb Itself?
Cannabis and cannabis products cannot be brought across the Canadian border in either direction, including to and from destinations where cannabis is legal, regardless of how you're transporting your device. Travel with an empty device and source locally at your destination where legal.
